For more than fifty years, Daggerdale has endured beneath the weight of violence, fear, and foreign oppression. Wedged between the Desertsmouth Mountains and the rugged Dagger Hills, the dale is a remote land of shadowed forests, rocky valleys, and lonely trails where travelers are more likely to meet armed patrols or hungry beasts than friendly merchants.
Abandoned homesteads slowly decay beside overgrown fields, while the remaining farmers and hunters shelter behind the wooden walls of small, fortified villages. The people of Daggerdale are proud and fiercely independent, but decades of hardship have taught them to distrust strangers—and to keep their doors barred after nightfall. At the heart of the region stands Dagger Falls, a rough frontier town controlled by the Zhentarim and the soldiers, mercenaries, and informants who serve them.
Zhentish caravans pass through heavily guarded streets while suspected rebels are dragged before corrupt officials and punished as a warning to others. Taverns are filled with spies, hired blades, and frightened townsfolk who have learned to measure every word before speaking. Beyond the town walls, the Zhentarim’s authority grows weaker, but the countryside is plagued by bandits, monsters, raiders, and patrols eager to seize whatever little the Dalesfolk still possess.Yet the Zhentarim are not the only darkness troubling Daggerdale. Strange illnesses, disturbing dreams, old curses, and half-forgotten legends have begun to stir fear among the people. Ruined temples and ancient tombs lie scattered throughout the dale, remnants of earlier ages whose secrets were never meant to be disturbed. Rumors spread quickly from farmstead to farmstead, changing with every telling, and no one can agree whether the dale is being punished, haunted, or deliberately tormented.
In Daggerdale, even an old children’s rhyme or a frightened whisper in a tavern may conceal a warning that has gone unheeded for generations. Against this growing darkness stands Randal Morn, the rightful ruler of Daggerdale and leader of the Freedom Riders.
Unable to confront the Zhentarim openly, his rebels wage a desperate struggle from hidden camps, striking patrols, protecting isolated villages, and keeping alive the hope that the dale might one day be free. To the Zhentarim he is an outlaw whose name must be erased; to many Dalesfolk he is the last symbol of their independence. As his struggle enters a dangerous new chapter, the fate of Daggerdale may come to depend upon a small company of adventurers willing to go where armies cannot. Their journey will carry them from the suspicious streets of Dagger Falls into forgotten burial places, across bleak hills, and beneath the tangled canopy of Spiderhaunt Wood. They will follow old legends, decipher cryptic riddles, confront sinister magic, and search for truths hidden beneath layers of deception. Ancient powers and ambitious enemies are moving around them, each seeking to claim the dale’s future for their own purposes.Strength alone will not be enough; the adventurers will need courage, judgment, and the wisdom to question even those who appear to offer help. This is a campaign of rebellion, mystery, and hard-won hope set against a dark and unforgiving frontier. The heroes begin as outsiders entering a dale that has every reason not to trust them, but their choices may draw them into the heart of its long struggle.
Every victory will bring new dangers, every discovery will reveal deeper shadows, and the conflict will gradually grow from isolated troubles into a battle for the soul of Daggerdale itself. Whether the dale remains chained beneath fear or finally sees the promise of freedom will depend upon those brave enough to stand beside its people when the darkness closes in.
