Moneychanger's Shop
The Time of Troubles & Era of Upheaval
The current period of time for our Forgotten Realms campaigns are set during the 1st and 2nd edition era.
Inspired By Ed Greenwood

The Moneychanger's Shop occupies a narrow, two-story stone building along one of the busier commercial streets of Dagger Falls, not far from the settlement's principal marketplace. Its thick walls, iron-barred windows, and heavy oak door reinforced with blackened iron make it considerably more secure than most neighboring establishments. Inside, the shop is surprisingly orderly, with polished wooden counters separating customers from the working area, where brass scales, counting trays, and carefully arranged stacks of coins occupy nearly every available surface.

Shelves behind the counter hold locked iron strongboxes, leather-bound ledgers, and small wooden compartments containing coins from across Faerûn. The faint scent of sealing wax, old parchment, and polished metal hangs in the air, while a pair of oil lamps provides illumination even during daylight hours. A narrow staircase leads to the proprietor's private quarters above, while a reinforced cellar beneath the building contains several ironbound chests secured behind a formidable locked door. Despite its modest size, the Moneychanger's Shop is an important establishment in Dagger Falls, providing merchants, travelers, and adventurers with a reliable place to exchange foreign currency, convert coins into more convenient denominations, and arrange the safekeeping of valuables.

The establishment is owned by Edric Vellmont, a thin, meticulously groomed man in his late forties whose unusually long fingers, sharp cheekbones, and neatly parted silver-streaked black hair give him the appearance of a scholar rather than a merchant. He wears dark green velvet coats with narrow sleeves, small round spectacles perched upon his nose, and a distinctive silver chain connecting a pocket watch to his waistcoat.

His most unusual feature is a missing little finger on his left hand, the result of an unfortunate encounter with bandits many years ago, an incident he refuses to discuss. Edric speaks in a quiet, measured voice and possesses an extraordinary talent for recognizing counterfeit coins, estimating the value of precious metals, and remembering the faces of customers who have conducted business with him. He charges a modest fee for exchanging currency, though unfamiliar merchants and wealthy adventurers often discover that his rates are somewhat less favorable than those offered to established townsfolk. Edric also purchases gemstones, jewelry, and small quantities of precious metals, carefully examining each item beneath a magnifying lens before making an offer. While outwardly courteous and professional, he is notoriously cautious about discussing his business affairs and maintains detailed records of nearly every transaction conducted within his establishment.

Operating a business involving considerable sums of money beneath Zhentarim occupation requires a delicate balance of discretion, cooperation, and self-preservation. Edric pays the required taxes and fees without complaint, knowing that even the appearance of resistance could invite confiscation of his property or imprisonment. Zhentarim officers occasionally visit the shop to exchange foreign coinage, collect payments, or inquire about unusually large transactions, and Edric has learned to answer their questions without volunteering unnecessary information. Nevertheless, he quietly resents the occupation and has occasionally helped trusted townsfolk conceal small portions of their savings from the authorities.

A pair of hired guards watches over the premises during business hours, while Edric personally secures the strongboxes and cellar each evening before retiring upstairs. Rumors persist that he maintains a second, carefully concealed ledger containing records of suspicious payments made by Zhentarim agents, though no one has ever produced evidence of its existence. For adventurers arriving in Dagger Falls with purses full of unfamiliar coins, recovered gemstones, or valuable treasures, the Moneychanger's Shop offers a useful service, provided they understand that in a town ruled by the Zhentarim, even an innocent financial transaction can attract unwanted attention.
